Abstract

This study examines the significance of psychological analysis for junior boxers in the critical age group of 15–16 years in Babylon Governorate. It highlights the issue of fluctuating and declining skill performance during official bouts, contrasting with their excellent performance levels during training. The study aimed to identify the levels of self-confidence and competitive anxiety among these boxers, and to determine the contribution rate of each variable to the quality of their skill performance. To achieve this, the researcher adopted a descriptive methodology. The sample consisted of 60 boxers who were administered scientific scales measuring self-confidence and competitive anxiety, alongside skill performance tests. The results revealed a strong, positive correlation between self-confidence and skill performance. Self-confidence was found to contribute 60.8% to performance enhancement, underscoring its crucial role in minimizing hesitation, improving the accuracy of motor responses, and effectively directing punches. Interestingly, the study contradicted the common misconception regarding the negative impact of anxiety. It demonstrated that competitive anxiety (at moderate levels) has a positive correlation and contributes 46.2% to the improvement of skill performance. In this context, it acts as "facilitative anxiety," stimulating alertness, attention, and reaction speed. Based on these findings, the study recommended the integration of psychological preparation and mental training programs into the boxers' training plans. Furthermore, it emphasized the need to train athletes in "cognitive reappraisal" techniques, enabling them to interpret anxiety symptoms as indicators of readiness rather than fear.
